lovely reusable gift wrapping. It's not as mad as it sounds and we're really very proud of our Evergreen Wraps. You see, they can be used to for gift wrapping, or with a couple of knots you can make it into a shopping bag, or a shoulder bag, or a scarf; the possibilities are endless but the best part is that they can save you money and save the environment. Reusable gift wrapping – because anything else is rubbish. Due to the poor quality of the paper and the finishes and glosses applied to it and all of the sticky tape on it, the majority of wrapping paper cannot be recycled and instead ends up in our landfill sites. At Christmas time in the UK we use 11,000 tons of wrapping paper, which is enough to gift wrap a large Channel Island. It takes 6 mature trees to make one ton of wrapping paper; for those without a calculator that means we destroy 66,000 trees every Christmas – imagine how many we use over the course of a year.
As consumers we produce a staggering amount of waste, from food waste to plastic bags, to textile waste and waste paper. According to the government body WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), who are behind a number of great waste reduction campaigns including 'Bag for Life' and 'Love Food , Hate Waste' estimate that at Christmas time alone we produce 11,000 tons of waste just from wrapping paper, that is enough paper to cover the whole of Guernsey, or for all you astronauts out there it represents enough waste paper to stretch to moon.
There are several disadvantages to using wrapping paper: you can only use the paper once, it involves miles of sticky tape, you're guaranteed to cut the paper just a tiny bit too small to go around the present, but it is the various finishes applied to the paper that mean it cannot be recycled which means that it is destined for landfill sites.
